Neurodiversity in the workplace

How do you create a workplace where a wider range of neuroprofiles can thrive, contribute and develop – benefiting people, operations and competitiveness alike?

Guide

Neurodiversity in the workplace is an inspirational guide for companies wishing to work systematically and sustainably with differences in how we think, sense, feel and work.

All brains are different. Neurodiversity is about the many natural variations people have in their neuroprofiles – in other words, our individual strengths, preferences and needs. When a workplace is designed with this diversity in mind, more employees can thrive and succeed in their work. At the same time, companies can gain access to more talent, reduce absenteeism and staff turnover, and strengthen innovation and development.

Neuro

A shared framework for working with neurodiversity

The guide has been prepared by a broadly represented working group with expertise in neurodiversity under Danish Standards' Sustainability Forum S-1000. The group has gathered knowledge, reflections and concrete proposals on how companies can work with neurodiversity in practice. Read more about the group in the guide.

The guide is not a standard, but a source of inspiration and a working tool that can be applied flexibly and adapted to each company's context, culture and needs. Its purpose is to create a shared frame of reference and provide concrete proposals for how neurodiversity can be considered in leadership, the work environment and culture alike.

From strategy to everyday practice

The content is structured into seven chapters that follow the entire employee journey, giving a complete overview of where a focus on neurodiversity can make a difference in practice. The guide addresses, among other things:

  • how to set a clear direction and anchor the work at management level
  • how recruitment and onboarding can be organised with a focus on tasks, structures and flexibility
  • how to build a culture with room for difference and shared responsibility
  • how leadership, structure and the everyday work environment can be adjusted with simple measures
  • how wellbeing, retention and development can be strengthened over time
  • how to manage periods of difficulty in a sustainable way
  • and how to continuously follow up, learn and adjust your efforts

The guide contains concrete suggestions for consideration, depending on where the company wishes to start.

Target audience and use

The guide is aimed primarily at managers, but can also be used by HR, occupational health and safety organisations, employee representatives and others working with diversity, wellbeing, the work environment and organisational development.

The focus is on structures, tasks and collaboration – not on diagnoses. The aim is to make difference an integrated part of the business and to create workplaces where more people can succeed in their tasks.
