The Digital Product Passport - Guide to preparing for future requirements and opportunities

This guide introduces the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and gives your company an overview of what the DPP entails. It also provides inspiration for how you can explore potential business opportunities and prepare for the upcoming EU requirements.

Do you want to stay ahead of the curve by digitalising your product information, strengthening your market position and increasing your competitiveness? If so, it is a good idea to start preparing now. Business opportunities need to be analysed, data needs to be mapped, and IT system requirements need to be assessed. It pays to be ready when the EU’s legal requirements for Digital Product Passports are gradually rolled out for most of all products on the European market over the next ten years. Responsibility for providing a valid DPP lies with the party placing the product on the market, regardless of the size of the company, and the requirements also apply to subcontractors, such as component suppliers.

The requirements for Digital Product Passports will be laid down through EU legislation and supporting standards. The first Digital Product Passports must be ready from 2027, starting with batteries for light means of transport and then gradually extending to more product groups, beginning for example with textiles and clothing from 2028 (see expected timeline on p. 15).

You can already start preparing to use the DPP to manage product information in your business and to comply with future DPP requirements. This is precisely what this guide is designed to help you do.
