Overview
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) – a joint initiative of World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) – are the two leading global frameworks for GHG accounting.
Until now, their standards have been developed separately, with different scopes and approaches to verification. ISO’s 1406X series forms the basis for legislation, regulation, and verification in many industries, while the GHG Protocol underpins major sustainability and disclosure initiatives worldwide.
ISO and the GHG Protocol have now launched a landmark collaboration to align their methodologies into a single, unified international framework for greenhouse gas accounting and reporting. By bringing together the ISO 1406X series and GHG Protocol standards, the partnership merges technical rigor with policy relevance and practical usability. The goal is to improve global consistency and comparability, strengthening the foundation for credible climate action.
Danish Standards (DS), in cooperation with Standard Norway (SN), Swedish Institute for Standards (SIS) and Finnish Standards (SFS), invites you to a joint Nordic webinar to learn more about the scope, purpose, and planned approach of the new ISO-GHG Protocol partnership.
During the webinar, Marco Rossi, Director at ISO, will share insights into why this work is critical and how it will impact organizations globally. Moreover, Nordic experts already involved in the process will provide an update on ongoing work, explain how the alignment is progressing, and outline opportunities for stakeholder involvement throughout 2026. You will also get the opportunity to ask questions.
What to expect
This webinar welcomes a broad audience and will provide insights into:
- The significance and background of the ISO-GHG Protocol collaboration
- The benefits and opportunities of moving toward a common international approach
- The planned process, areas of joint development and current challenges
- How Nordic stakeholders can actively engage in the ongoing standardization projects.
Target Group
This webinar is intended for a broad range of stakeholders working with climate, climate change or environment, including:
- Organizations, companies, industry associations, NGOs, research institutions, that report or plan to report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and others with an interest in global frameworks for GHG accounting
- Sustainability and ESG professionals, climate officers, and environmental specialists
- Auditors, consultants, and advisors involved in climate accounting and GHG reporting
- Public authorities and government institutions that use or develop requirements for climate data
The webinar is relevant for anyone seeking insight into the new ISO-GHG Protocol partnership and its implications for future international standards for climate reporting.
Agenda
- Welcome and Introduction
- The ISO and GHG Protocol Partnership: Purpose, Plan & Global Impact
Marco Rossi, Director of Standardization at the ISO Central Secretariat in Geneva
- DualLogo Standards in Progress: Corporate, Project & Product. Challenges and next steps
Thea Lyngseth, Programme Officer, ECOS
Thea will provide an overview of how cooperation between the GHG Protocol and the ISO standards - ISO 14064‑1 (Corporate), ISO 14064‑2 (Project), and ISO 14067 (Product) - is going to proceed. Participants will gain insight into how these standards interact, where they differ, and how alignment efforts are shaping their respective timelines. The session will also highlight why broad stakeholder participation is crucial for developing standards that are robust, coherent, and practical to implement.
- Why Alignment Matters: An energy transition perspective
Nicholas Albert O'Keeffe, Lead Portfolio Manager, Norlys Energy Trading, member of Danish Standards
How harmonized methodologies support implementation, decision-making and real-world emissions management. This session will explore how the energy sector’s significant role in global emissions makes it a crucial arena for evaluating the impact of climate and environmental initiatives. Nicholas will give an insight into how political, commercial, and environmental priorities intersect across the energy value chain, and how market-based mechanisms increasingly shape decisions. As so, he will dive into why harmonized methodologies are essential for more efficient and higher quality decision making - and how understanding both intended and unintended externalities is key for practitioners navigating a complex, dynamic, and politically influenced energy market.
- The current standards - what needs to be aligned
Tomas Ekvall, PhD, Researcher & Advisor, TERRA, member of Swedish Institute for Standards
This presentation will provide insight into the key points of conflict between ISO standards and the GHG Protocol - particularly around how to model electricity generation and account for processes with multiple products. Tomas will explain why these inconsistencies matter in practice and how they may be resolved by recognizing that different types of GHG accounting serve different purposes.
